Portrait painting is a genre in painting, where the intent is to depict the

visual appearance of the subject, most often a person, but pets are also becoming popular with the advent of modern photography, computers and the painter a portrait can easily and inexpensively be done from a photograph.  A well executed portrait is expected to show the inner essence of the subject not just a physical likeness.

The term 'portrait painting' can also describe a painted portrait. Portraitists create their portraits by commission or are inspired by admiration or affection for the subject. If an artist portrays him- or herself, the result is called a self-portrait.
